Perfect for my field kit

This is a solid sound level meter for the price.I needed something that could actually measure noise in my workshop without costing an arm and a leg, so this fit the bill nicely. The readings seem pretty accurate when I compare them to other meters I have used before. The 29 to 138 dB range covers just about everything you would encounter in normal use.I appreciate that it has A, C, and Z weightings along with Fast and Slow response options. That gives you flexibility depending on what kind of noise you are trying to measure. The IP54 rating is a nice touch too since I often work in dusty environments where things can get messy. My only real gripe is that the LCD screen could be bigger. It works fine, but having to squint at those numbers after a while gets old fast.Overall this does exactly what it says and feels well built for field use.

Reliable sound meter with useful modes

This is a nice noise meter and it is very easy to use for basic sound level checks. The unit feels reliable, and the readings are easy to see on the display.I did have to spend some time understanding all the supported modes and settings, but I consider that a good thing because it gives more flexibility than a very basic meter. Once I got familiar with the controls, it was straightforward to use.Overall, this is a well made and useful sound meter for checking noise levels around the house, shop, or workspace.

A fantastic and highly precise tool for monitoring sound levels

This addition to my gear has been such a delight to use for my various projects. The design is simple yet effective, blending in perfectly with my existing equipment without feeling out of place or clunky. I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly it integrated into my routine, making it easy to get accurate readings and helping everything feel a little more professional from the moment I set it up.Everything about the quality feels solid and well-made, which gives me confidence that it will last for a long time. It is rare to find something that works this well right out of the packaging, but this really exceeded my expectations. I am genuinely happy with this choice and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to add a little extra functionality and precision to their workspace or outdoor environment.

Sound level meter

This sound level meter works well for my home workshop noise monitoring. The range from 29 to 138 dB covers everything from quiet hums to loud machinery. The different weighting options let me measure for different standards. The display is clear and easy to read. It responds quickly to changes in noise levels. The battery lasts a long time. Good value for a professional grade meter without spending a fortune. Easy enough for beginners but accurate enough for pros.

Easy Readings, Quick Results

I've been using this sound level meter with music equipment, and it's also come in handy for checking household items that seem louder than expected. It's simple to use, and the readings settle quickly so you can get a measurement without much waiting around. The display is easy to read, which makes it convenient when taking quick checks in different spots. It works well overall and has been useful for getting a better sense of actual sound levels in everyday situations.ASIN# B0GSFFG34M

Useful for verifying equipment noise levels and shop measurements

I used this meter around my workshop and property to compare noise levels from power tools, equipment, and ventilation systems. The display is easy to read, and having the calibration certificate included provides additional confidence that the readings are at least starting from a known baseline. The controls were straightforward enough that I was taking measurements within a few minutes. I particularly liked being able to compare different operating conditions rather than relying on subjective impressions of what "sounds louder." The meter responded quickly to changes in sound levels and produced consistent readings when measuring the same source repeatedly. This is still a measurement tool, not a laboratory instrument, so users should spend a little time understanding the weighting and response settings if they need highly specific data. For general workplace, shop, environmental, or equipment noise measurements, it provides far more information than simply guessing.I would rate this 5 stars because it is easy to use, produces repeatable measurements, and helps quantify noise levels that would otherwise be difficult to evaluate accurately. It's a good fit for anyone who regularly works with machinery, HVAC equipment, generators, or other noise-producing equipment.

More than a sound meter. It's an accurate and repeatable scientific instrument. Would do it again.

I do a lot of reviews of all kinds of products, and I'm trying to provide more useful information on the products being tested. One of the important factors consumers care about for many items like appliances is their noise level. This device lets me provide an accurate measurement that means something. It also allows me to fairly compare multiple items with non-subjective, apples-to-apples noise level comparisons. It's easy to use. It works well. The results are solid and repeatable, as they should be with any quality scientific instrument. Happy with it and would do it again.

With this I proved that LOUD is really LOUD, and LOW is LOW. Amazing science breakthrough! :D

At some point curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to stop guessing how loud things were and start collecting actual evidence. The Class 2 Sound Level Meter is aimed at users who need more than a simple decibel reading. It provides professional level measurement capabilities with a range spanning 29 dB to 138 dB and supports frequencies from 20Hz to 12.5kHz. The inclusion of A, C, and Z weighting options along with Fast and Slow response modes significantly expands its usefulness across industrial, occupational, environmental, and community noise monitoring applications. The overall design strikes a nice balance between professional functionality and usability. The display is easy to read, and the controls are arranged logically enough that navigating menus does not feel like solving a puzzle. The housing feels solid and appropriately durable for regular use in workplaces, facilities, field inspections, and environmental surveys. It has the appearance of equipment intended for actual measurement work rather than casual novelty use.Setup is straightforward for basic operation, but users seeking accurate and meaningful data should spend some time understanding the available settings. Different weighting scales exist for specific measurement purposes, and selecting the correct mode can significantly affect results. Fortunately, once the basic concepts are understood, operation becomes fairly intuitive.Performance is one of the strongest aspects of this meter. Readings update quickly when sound levels change, and measurements remain stable during continuous monitoring. The Fast and Slow response options are useful depending on whether the goal is capturing rapid fluctuations or obtaining smoother average readings. The broad measurement range allows the device to handle everything from relatively quiet indoor environments to significantly louder industrial settings. The Class 2 rating is particularly important because it places the meter in a category commonly used for professional noise assessments. While it may not replace high end laboratory equipment in every scenario, it provides substantially more credibility and measurement capability than many entry level decibel meters. For workplace safety evaluations, environmental studies, equipment noise analysis, and community noise investigations, those features are valuable. There are a few limitations worth mentioning. Users conducting official compliance testing may still need routine calibration verification and adherence to local standards. Some first time users may also find the terminology surrounding weighting networks and response times slightly intimidating. Additionally, this is not the smallest meter available, so portability is good but not exceptional.Overall, the CRY2831 feels like a legitimate measurement instrument that offers substantial functionality without becoming unnecessarily difficult to operate. The combination of Class 2 accuracy, multiple weighting options, broad measurement capability, and solid build quality makes it useful across a wide range of professional and advanced hobbyist applications. It provides meaningful data, reliable operation, and enough flexibility to satisfy users who need more than a simple noise reading.Great value for the bucks! :DWonderful Things? Class 2 sound measurement capability? Wide 29 to 138 dB operating range? A, C, and Z weighting modes included? Fast and Slow response settings available? Solid construction and professional appearance? Stable and responsive measurements? Suitable for industrial, workplace, and environmental useMeh! Things? Learning curve for new users? Calibration verification may be needed for critical work? Advanced features may exceed casual user requirements

More uses than you can imagine and it does the job

I'm giving this sound level meter a full 5 stars. It feels like a serious piece of test gear that's built well, works reliably, and is absolutely worth what it costs.I ordered this meter for practical noise checks around my workshop and property, and it immediately came across as real instrumentation rather than a toy. The housing feels solid in the hand, with no creaks or flimsy flex, and the buttons have a reassuring, positive click that makes it easy to operate even with work gloves on. The included foam windscreen and overall fit and finish show that someone actually thought about field use instead of just desktop use.The materials and craftsmanship are very impressive for this price range. The enclosure feels tough enough for industrial environments, and the IP-rated design gives confidence when using it in dusty or less-than-perfect conditions. The microphone assembly looks and behaves like proper test hardware, and the backlit display, ports, and battery compartment all line up cleanly with no cheap shortcuts in the molding or assembly.Performance wise, this meter does exactly what I hoped for and then some. The wide dB range easily covers quiet indoor spaces and loud machinery without feeling like youre hitting the limits all the time. Being able to work across a broad frequency span makes it genuinely useful for checking everything from HVAC noise to high-pitched equipment squeals, instead of only handling average sounds. The different weighting and time settings turn it into a flexible tool instead of a one-trick gadget. I can use one mode when Im thinking about environmental noise and another when Im looking at equipment peaks, and the fast/slow response options make it simple to choose between catching quick spikes or smoothing things out. Once you spend a little time learning the options, switching among them becomes second nature and you start to treat the meter like part of your standard kit.Reading the screen is straightforward, and the layout is clean enough that you dont feel like youre trying to decode a puzzle while youre standing next to a loud machine. The numbers settle quickly but not nervously, which is ideal when youre trying to compare conditions or capture a stable value. In real use, it felt more like working with professional-grade gear than a budget compromise, which is saying a lot at this price point. In terms of value for the money, this meter hits a sweet spot. Its nowhere near the cost of high-end lab equipment, but it clearly sits several steps above the cheap just for curiosity noise gadgets. For what you pay, you get proper build quality, serious measurement capability, a calibration certificate for peace of mind, and a meter that fits comfortably in a field kit for work or advanced hobby use.If theres any downside, its mainly that there is a bit of a learning curve if youve never dealt with weightings or response modes before, but thats the nature of using a real measurement tool. In my view thats actually a positive: you grow into the capabilities instead of hitting a hard limit right away. Once youre past that initial learning, the meter becomes an easy go-to whenever you want facts instead of guesses about how loud something really is.Overall, this is a clever and very capable meter that earns its spot in my toolbox. It combines sturdy construction, thoughtful design, and serious measurement features into a package that still feels like a good deal. If youre looking for a sound level meter that can handle real work without breaking the bank, this one is an easy 5-star choice.

Good Product

A very good and not too expensive sound level measuring device. It has a professional rating and is therefore viable for submission to government agencies overseeing community sound violations. I recommend buying it if needed.

I purchased both the Extech 407732 and the Reed St-805. The Prime price currently has the Reed cheaper by $30. Except for the color of the case they are the same instrument. Same button layout, same functions. Everything the same but the color in the plastic case. I also purchased the sound calibrator from Reed. It was significantly cheaper.

A very good sound level meter, but look out for the recalibration issue

Seemingly quite good. I won't address audiophile applications because I am not using the tool in that way. I wanted a device that would monitor sound levels in my neighborhood and on construction sites that I drive to so that I wouldn't have to rely on the assertions of others about actual and prospective noise impacts. This device is quite well suited for that. The MAX function allows you to catch peak impact noises, isolating them from the basic noise levels of the test area. This device was designed as a temporary or moment-to-moment metering device. Individuals who have the need to trap data and transfer a stream to a computer record should look for a different type of tool or a device with a larger set of metering abilities. The company delivers the device in calibrated condition, of course, but is inconsistent in its recommendation for calibration through time. In the accompanying user guide, recalibration is recommended before every use, especially if the instrument has not been used for some time. On the company's web site, recalibration is recommended once a year. Recalibration requires an additional device; Extech offers one that costs twice as much as the meter itself. Independent professionals or employees of sound analysis services won't be bothered by the expense, but casual users of the device may find that to be a large pill to swallow to keep a tool tuned up that is used only now and then.I metered a television broadcast whose volume was set in the overlap zone for the device's high and low ranges and found the readings to be pretty much in agreement -- perhaps 1-2 dB apart. This was a rough eyeball comparison, not a serious attempt to determine the meter's consistency. My verdict is that the unit is easily good enough for occasional private party use and even quick professional determinations to guide expectations in a context where more extensive noise level studies are planned.

Worked good what more can I say

I needed a high quality sound meter so as to verify or challenge sound findings in a project report. I was almost sure the data in the report was erroneous, however since I knew that my ears would not be considered as accurate sound instruments, I bought this meter. I found it very easy to use, and it more than verified that the information in the report was vastly inaccurate. Numerous other people have also used it and I have not heard any complaints about it. For me it was a very good investment.

The best sound level meter ever!

As a life long audiophile who grew up with the popular Radio Shack sound level meter, I found the Extech 407732 to be a most impressive step up in both form and function. This well designed and user friendly device makes channel level balancing even more accurate and is most helpful when measuring surround speakers. Sound level measurements are displayed in digital form and the meter is easily managed with one hand making sound level adjustments that much easier. This is a great tool that I wish I had discovered years ago.

High quality, solid construction, easy to use for home audio and even car exhaust systems!

My only comparison is a 50% cheaper Galaxy brand decibel meter. This is high quality, great construction and definitely worth the price relative to my old Galaxy meter. My old Galaxy meter was slightly frustrating because for some reason you had to choose WHICH decibel level range you wanted to listen-in on. Perhaps this makes it more precise, but the Extech SL510 is great because it reads from 35db through 130db; you don't have to select a range, it just works. Also the Galaxy peak hold functions weren't ideal. I appreciate the Extech's ability to do min and max and ability to work right off the bat. These decibel meters are great for home audio / home theatre as well as for before and after effects of a new performance car exhaust. I had a loud "race" car and wanted to definitively measure the effects of different muffler and exhaust designs. Also I wanted to know "cruising" sound levels and WOT sound levels. Also, some tracks (and race courses) actually have a maximum decibel sound level permitted, this is quite handy to own, depending on your particular uses.

Every electric guitarist should have one.

I made the mistake this year of purchasing a 120 Watt amp and 4x12 speaker stack to amplify my guitar. Although it sounds great, there's been more than one instance of ear ringing after a long practice session, so decided it was time to buy a meter and follow Osha's noise pollution guidelines to keep my ears safe (100 dBA for 2 hours or 90 dBA for 8, in case you were wondering). Haven't had any issues since. The model I bought was only $20 and did a fairly decent job, but this Extech model is certainly better. One of the best features is the ability to record a sample and see what was the high and low points of it. It also can measure in dBA or dBC for those that need it. This meter feels well built, is comfortable to hold, and easy to read with, especially when the backlight is on.I think for most uses the $20 range meters would work just fine, but if you need the extra features this meters sport, then I highly recommend it.Important to note: read the small handout before you use! Very easy to miss things, like holding down Record in order to stop recording so you can power down your device!
